The physical things that are very important to you often represent what you value. What are the 5 things in your room that you cannot live without? What do you think that means about your values? Do you think they represent the things in life you really value? If not, why do you think they don’t match up?

1. Laptop (with Internet Connection)
2. Bed
3. Candy
4. Root Beer
5. George Foreman Grill
I think these represent what I really value. I’m a pretty simple person in my opinion. So this list shows that the things in life that I really value are the things that I enjoy and are my little things I do to relax and feel better.
My laptop is my everything though. It’s my work, academics, entertainment, data storage, tool. Without it I can’t really do anything that I do. I don’t think I’m one of those people that can’t pull themselves away from technology, but everything I do involves a computer. It doesn’t have to specifically be my computer either. I just need my data and programs. I can use that on any computer as long as I have my hard drives.
My bed is next because I love sleep more than most things in the world. It’s right up there by showers, but I don’t have a shower in my room. If I could I would just go to sleep for the rest of my life. (If I had someone with me). You know when you wake up and check the clock and you don’t have to get up yet and you roll over and go “mmmm” and your bed feels way more comfortable then when you were trying to fall asleep? I want to hold that feeling for eternity.
Candy is an indulgence of mine. I have so much of it, and I eat a lot of it. That explains my figure.
Root Beer is another indulgence, but one that I take less often. I don’t want it to lose its significance/effect on me, so I usually only drink it when I can really relax and enjoy it. It’s a feel good thing.
My grill, I don’t know what I’d eat without it. I would have gotten sick of sandwiches a long time ago if it wasn’t for my grill.
I think I could honestly live without everything in my room. In all honestly, the only items in my room that I truly “value” are the pictures of my friends, family, and loved ones. I have those as a constant reminder that I live a very blessed life and that I have a great support system. Without those people in my life I wouldn’t be where I am today. I believe that the pictures represent my values in life because my friends, family, and loved ones are very important to me. As for everything else in my room, it’s a constant reminder that I am very blessed and I should never complain for never having enough. I never “need” anything, I am just fortunate to have the resources to be privileged to have it.
As Brett said, I could live without most things in my room. But if I had to pick 5, they would be my Bible, my journal, my scrapbook, a fleece blanket, and my body pillow. Above all, the Bible and the journal to go along with it represent my walk with God and how much I value my faith. Without God and His promise of eternal life I have no purpose. The scrapbook would be to have pictures of my family and friends- they are my support. And the rest are just for comfort reasons ;)
This is really tough.
(In no particular order)
1. My glasses
2. stove
3. bicycle
4. fridge
5. running water
I guess the things that I truly value are the things that I'm so fortunate to have. I am so grateful for the things so many people take for granted/expect. These are things that not everyone has and in many countries (including Nicaragua) it's not unusual. I try really hard to respect and conserve these things because they do have an impact on our earth.
These things really help me out. My glasses is kind of obvious. Stoves make it quick to prepare food (instead of having to make a fire or something)(and yet people think cooking on a stove takes too long.....) My bicycle gets me around and brings me on beautiful rides. My fridge helps to preserve food so I don't have to grocery shop daily. Finally, running water makes it easier to cook, clean, and drink, and get clean without having to travel far and keep it in containers. And its (somewhat) clean.
Sure, call me a hippie, but really I just think I'm blessed.
things that are near and dear to me:
1. Bible
2. Notebook
3. Sketchbook
4. Running Shoes
5. Contacts and/or glasses
My Bible and my notebook go hand in hand. My faith is very important to me. My notebook is where I take notes and journal in some thoughts from whatever I've read in my Bible or other books. I've always had a sketchbook, and I would just feel out of place without it. I need to have a place where I can draw, paint, and doodle and get ideas down on paper. My running shoes are essential because I LOVE to run. I love getting that runner's high, all of the thinking time, and all the wonderful places I go while running. Not to mention that feeling of invincibility after a long run. It's one of the best feelings ever! I had a hard time thinking of number 5... so I'm going off of Mia's idea and I put down my contacts and/or glasses because it's really hard to see the wonderful things in life without them.
1. Computer
2. Cell Phone
3. Ipod
4. Contacts/Glasses
5. Letter from my sister
I chose my computer simply because I am always on the internet whether its staying connected to friends/family, doing homework, or looking up new exercises.
Even though I rarely text or call anyone, I chose my cell phone because its the one or two texts that I get from friends or family that can put me in a great mood.
My Ipod because I use this more than anything I own, even my cell phone.
I cannot see with out wearing glasses or contacts so it just makes sense to have them on my list.
The last thing is a letter that my sister wrote me last year and gave it to me the day I left to come to stout. I have probably read it 100x and it inspires me every time.
They match up with my values as most have a tie into my family.
1. Gaming Desktop (with Internet Connection)
2. Mountain Dew
3. Record Player + Albums
4. Window
5. Water bottle
By looking at this list, I can tell that I'm kind of materialistic, even though I don't consider myself to be. For instance, my computer (much like what Adamme said) is my everything. But most importantly it allows me to play games with my friends; something I value a great deal. I can't live without caffeine. Like I'm physically addicted. So that's why I chose Mountain Dew.
Along with games, music was once was and still is a big part of my life. While most of my music is digital, I still yearn for music of generations before me.
I think the objects I listed only do a little in representing my values. Genuine conversation with people is something that I value and these objects might not show that.
1. Camera
2. Laptop
3. Bible
4. Sketchbook
5. Photographs
My camera is highly important to me, not because it cost a lot of money, but because photography is just something I'm really passionate about. Being able to capture a particular moment, at that particular moment means the world to me.
While being at school, my laptop is my main way of communicating with the people I love back home. It's always really hard being so far away from home most of the year, so not being able to see them on skype would be difficult.
The Bible, well, it's the Bible. And it's what I turn to when I don't have the answer for how to deal with something. My faith is also really important to me, and if I were only able to have one book - the Bible would be my book of choice.
I'm just starting to get into sketching more, but with a sketchbook I'm able to jot down any thoughts I have, or sketch anything I find beautiful or creative. I think it's important to embrace that talent, and to have something to be your creative outlet.
And lastly, photographs. Again, being far away from home, it's great to have photographs around my room to remind me of memories, or just people in general. I think it's important to me to have the ability to bring my loved ones with me everywhere. Especially this summer on my trip to Uganda. I obviously won't get to see them that much, or maybe even skype with them. So just being able to look at a photo will hopefully help cure the homesickness
Thanks Adamme, Brett, Lauren, Mia, Amanda, Nolan, Matt, & Laura for sharing.
Here is my list:
1. Adeline
2. Don
3. Wedding Ring/Band
4. Starfish Necklace
5. Books-both mine and Adeline's...we love our books!
