Hi everyone!
This week's blog post will be continuing an idea from training, the 6 word memoir.
So, pretty simple, post your 6 word philosophy and then give a brief explanation of why you picked it.

My six word memoir is:

Be A Voice
Not An Echo

I chose this because I want my resident's to feel accepted and know that it's OK to be different and stand out in their own way. Also, I want to be original and do things that maybe other RA's haven't done in the past. I want to create new ideas and try new things and hopefully, grow from them. I think that if my resident's, staff members and friends see my being unique and comfortable in who I am, that they too will feel able to do the same. College is a time to start over and become who you've always wanted to be. Being yourself and feeling confident in showing that to others is one of the best things you can do.

Thrive towards your goals, not mistakes.

I chose this because I know myself included, many people can become hung up on certain aspects of themselves or choices they have made or sometimes even things they can not control. I believe if people have the power to grow into their goals instead of letting their downfalls grow on them, they will lead a more successful life. Many of these goals can be planted now in college with majors/careers/involvement/GPA. College is also a place to be able to set short and long terms goals or set up stepping stones for yourself and if you are able to focus diligently towards them and not the cracks between you will be able to thrive in the results of your actions.

Before you enter, know thy self.

I took a Western Civ. class freshman year and my history professor was an inspirational man. During his last lecture he said these exact words, I believe it was something pertaining to Greek philosophy. Anyway, these six words were emphasized in his last lecture. Truly I believe it means to be yourself. If you are not yourself, then who are you? Perhaps that is why most of us are here, to know ourselves.

Take a Chance,
Find What's Important.

I chose these six words because I feel like the most significant thing I did as a freshman was to try out many different opportunities and find out who I was, what I enjoyed, and the kind of person I wanted to become. I have the strong desire for my residents to do the same; to take the risk of trying something new or investing in something more than usual so that they can see the awesome reward of gaining new experiences and learning more about themselves. Most of all, I want to find out what's truly important to them and how to grow in the right ways to become who they want to be for the rest of their lives.

Have fun, treat each other kind.

These six words are actually from my mountain bike racing days. Don, the man who owned the racing series, would see off every race and start it with "Go fast, have fun, be safe, and most importantly, treat each other kind." Those words, mainly "have fun" and "treat each other kind" have stuck with me for quite some time now and I find myself repeating those words to myself in many situations. It kind of goes back to the fish philosophy we talked about for C.E.D. in training, that you can always have fun, and you can always be respectable to others.

Stay inspired.
Never lose hope.

I chose this as my 6 (well, uh 5 word...sorry) word memoir because I think it is truly an amazing experience to seek and find inspiration in everyday life. Appreciate the small things, take notice of minute details, learn where other people come from. Now use that inspiration from wherever you find it and never lose hope that someday, things will work out if you keep working hard at it.

Push yourself foreword, progress is necessary.

I chose this because it reminds me of why I decided to come to college in the first place. It also really shows the difference between myself and my sisters. Although I wish the world wasnt run off of money, which it is, as such I need to make money. Now this sounds selfish, but I'm actually getting into this for my parents. Money has been an issue for a while, enough to the point the "kids" have noticed and I'm making it a priority to "get rich" or wealthy enough to help them live happy for a while.

And its also a reminder of college in general, that you need to keep getting everything done on time, as well as in a timely manner, to graduate or get a degree.

Never Accept Mediocrity; Be Your Best.

This is a quote my father told me when I was in high school, and said a typical phrase that I never since have said "I'll do just enough to get by." He looked at me and said "why would you live your life like that?" He then explained that once you get into the work force, living by that mentality wont get you any higher up in the ladder. He explained that doing your best is something that defines who you are. If you choose to live by the mentality of doing just enough, your always going to take that path. He told me to always challenge myself, take risks, and never be afraid to take on more than I think I can handle. Never accepting mediocrity is something from that day on I have lived by. The quote says "Never Accept Mediocrity; Be YOUR Best," because not everyone is going to be the best at everything. As long as you are doing your best, and challenging yourself, and trying your hardest, then you are working towards success in every way you can.

Every problem has a creative solution.

I like this because it shows that when faced with a problem, even though a solution might not be immediately obvious, there is always something that can be done. Problem solving gives a person an opportunity to use all kinds of skills that they possess, and this phrase really shows that. Not being afraid to approach a problem from a different angle really opens up new possibilities.
