Semester Resolutions

Hello everyone,

With every start to a new year, many people make resolutions or set goals to better themselves in some way. While a positive theory, in practice these resolutions can be flawed from the start and are destined to fail. Rather than helping us, they can make us feel guilty or think that positive change is hopeless. Some resolve to lose 20 pounds, or stop eating junk food, or stop smoking, or get straight As, or always be on time. Sometimes these resolutions are too enormous, because the behaviors are too ingrained, and the thinking is too negative.

This year, instead of setting unrealistic goals, let us make real, attainable resolutions that we as a staff can help encourage each other in (at least for this semester). In order to do this, we must publicly declare our resolutions in order to hold ourselves accountable.

Please post at least one resolution that you are making for this semester or this year in the following format. If you would like, you can post multiple resolutions:
1) Regardless of how ambitious or simple your ultimate resolution is, state it and a list of shorter, attainable goals that you intend to complete over a given period of time.
2) Then develop a specific action plan that describes what this change actually looks like on a day to day or weekly basis.
3) Finally, state your motivation or reason(s) why this goal is important to you. It is important that you convince yourself of the benefits of your resolution, otherwise when it gets tough you will be more likely to give up.

We will be reflecting on our progress at the end of the semester!

this semester, my goal is to eat better in order to take better care of myself. I eat a lot of junk food, and I think that taking that off is a good place to start.
To do this my plan is to skip the desert line at the commons, also to look into some of the foods I eat in order to know what I'm putting in myself. I do like eating healthy foods, its just that I add in the junk that isnt so good.
My motivation is that I am realizing that I gotta take care of me. I have not always done that, and usually throw caution into the wind and go for things, but thats not very sustainable as I get older. Its just me realizing that if i want to be still mountain biking in 30 years, that I should work so that I can stil do the things I love later in life.

This semester my goal is to become more flexible and start running again.

My plan is to set time aside at least 3 times a week to go for a run, and stretch out.

My motivation for this is because I am slowly getting out of shape (more so than I already am) Being a coach and wanting to continue coaching in college I will need to be more in touch with my body and flexibility.

A goal for me would be to make sure I get my homework done in a more timely manner. All throughout last semester I waited until Sundays to get my work done, but making sure I don't have any homework on Sundays would be fantastic. An easy way to make that more plausible would be to get my work done right after class, which for this semester will be easier. And try to make sure that work gets done before I go to bed that night.
On a daily basis I already kind of explained: I would do the work right after the class, and make sure I get it done before I go to bed, as apposed to wasting time on other things.
This goal is important to me, because even this week I found myself with little work to get done, and not all of it done by Sunday. That kind of bothers me, I know i can get it done, but I just never did. The reason I find this so helpful is that I wont feel Like my week starts on Sundays, and it will feel like a longer weekend, as well as a more relaxing one.

This semester my goal is to start working out and eating healthier. I'm not looking to lose a certain amount of weight, but I want to feel stronger and more energized throughout the day. I have been going back and forth on when I wanted to start this, but this year just feels right. I feel like everything in my life is starting to come together and that I actually have a path I want to go. I also was a little scared about purchasing a $135 pass for the entire year because that's alot of money for me to spend. So far though, it has been worth it. I've been going to the gym everyday (except sunday-my resting day). Everyday I try to do more and more than I did the day before and I'm starting to feel really good. I feel like my motivation is actually doing something for myself for once instead of worrying about other people.

This semester my goal is to eat healthier and exercise more. Those terms aren't very specific, but I don't want to evaluate myself based on how much I weigh. Rather, I will measure myself based on how many times per week I exercise, how I feel throughout the day without relying on sugar or caffeine, and body fat.

To do this, my plan is to MAKE time in my schedule for proper exercise at the gym. This means that I need to be extra diligent about completing my hw in a timely manner, so that I'm not packing so much into one day. However, sometimes for me it is not a matter of getting things done efficiently, but about just saying "that's enough for today." I need to have a more balanced daily schedule, and recognize that my health is just as important as my academics.

As for eating healthier, my goal is to eat at the commons less (because it is more of a temptation to eat more than I need or to take from the dessert bar), and buy more fruits and vegetables to put in my fridge. In addition, to drink more low-calorie liquids - water, tea, all-natural juice, etc. Also, avoiding foods with lots of synthetic or processed ingredients - I want to eat organic or low-ingredient foods wherever possible.

My motivation for eating healthier and exercising more is two-fold: 1) I know I will feel and look better on a daily basis. I would like to get to a point where I feel energized and good about myself throughout the day without relying on caffeine. I want to get to that point where they become a necessary part of my routine, something that I really WANT to do because if I don't I will feel crappy. I've been at that point before, and I want to get there again. 2) I know the long-term benefits to my health are priceless. There is less of a chance to get sick with a serious illness, the doctor bills will be less, for both reasons the stress will be less, and overall happiness will be increased.

I plan on getting A’s this semester.
I plan on turning in all homework
I plan on reviewing my daily notes every night
I plan on holding study groups

I will work hard each day to eliminate my mistakes and work on knowing my material not just memorizing it.
This goal is important to me because I want to be as knowledgeable as possibly while in my career so I can pull my own weight and help others, and plus I love engineering and its material.

I'd like to get into better shape this semester. I've put off working out and exercising and would like to get back into a habit of working out.
I plan on either swimming, running, or playing a sport 3-4 times a week, or every other day. The reason that I want to do this is because I will feel better on a daily basis, will have more energy during the day, and will be healthier in general.

My Goal for this Semester is pretty simple. I would like to be more like Kyle Herberg. But really, I would like to also work on not stressing out about the little things in life and just taking things as they come.

I plan on stopping to think about the things that stress me out, determine if I can do anything about them, and if not to simply accept that fact and move forward.

My motivation for this goal is to help stay more calm and in a way to take better care of myself. For I try to make sure to make healthy decisions, but often forget the importance of limiting stress in my life. I want to be someone whom others can look to and be a positive role model for others.

This is Macy again, sorry this is uber late.
This semester my goal is to loose 20 more pounds by May. I have been dieting/ exercising since the end of June and have lost 85 pounds. By the end of the school year I would like to hit the 100lb mark.
To do this I will continue my healthy diet and exercise. Since I am training for a half marathon I will be continuing to up my miles, but with this I need to make sure I am still putting enough in my body for what I take out when I run 6+ miles.
My Motivation is to be able to say I lost 100lbs, and although it sucks sometimes and is tough I will be proud of what I accomplished.
