When I Grow Up

When I Grow Up

Do you remember when you were younger; grownups were always asking us what we wanted to be when we grow up?

Post what you wanted to be when you were a little kid, and why. In addition, please include what career dreams or interests you had when you were younger. Have they have come true, or have perused any of them?
Do you still wish that you could?

When I was a kid I wanted to be a bunch of different things. The most vivid one I remember was to be a bodyguard. I think it was because I was all tough and stuff when I was in elementary school. There may have been some movie influences as well but I thought it would be fun to protect someone else and have some excitement as well.

As for career dreams or interests, I had no idea until about two years ago what my career dreams were. I guess I always wanted to be some sort of professional athlete but other than that I usually lived in the here and now and didn't really think about the future career. They have not come true. I am pretty far off from being a professional athlete but I like to watch the games or matches sometimes. :)

I don't still wish I could be a professional athlete. The one thing I do wish I could be (this was a later dream, like a couple years ago) a dancer. I wish I would have taken more classes as a youngster because the dancers that I have seen are so amazing and it looks like so much fun to be able to do flips and jumps and turns. I wish I could do that.

When I was in elementary school I wanted to be a vetranarian. Once I reached 7th grade I no longer wanted to be a vetranarian and officially wanted to be a proffessional football player. I pursued those dreams all they way up untill my sophomore year in college. Luckily, I had a back-up plan in case that didn't work out... its called getting good grades!

I do still wish I could have had a shot in the NFL. Only if I was not plagued by injury though. So, I am glad I quite playing football when I did.

This part is for who I think you should and should not consider hiring.

Tyler Johnson should be considered for hiring because he showed great enthusiasm for the RA position and had creative and unique ideas for community developement.

Shannon Collett should be considered for hiring because she showed good leadership skill and teamwork skills during the group process portion of the interviews.

Kelsey Hansen SHOULD NOT be considered for hiring. Kelsey did show enthusiasm for the RA position and does not seem to have any prior involvement with Univervisity Housing. She was also very hesitant in responding to her potential involvement with HEC.

I honestly can't remember how I used to respond to that question. I probably said an engineer or something like that. I used to play around with legos and knex pieces a lot. I also would have liked to be better at sports.

I got fairly good at sports, my favorite sport when I was young was football. Now it is wrestling, a sport that doesn't get the attention it deserves, most likely because people don't take the time to understand it, I find it better to watch than football.

My dream jobs today would be to be an analyst on ESPN, for college football or the NFL even. I love that stuff with a passion. I also would like to go up in space as childish as that sounds, but it would be amazing, I wouldn't want to be an astronaut though, just one of those rich people who buys a seat on a space shuttle.

Sometimes I wonder if I would have worked harder in high school if I could have reached a higher potential in academics, sports ect. I feel that I ended up alright there is that doubt in everyone's mind, but we can all look back and say "what if." And I say to that ,"If ifs and buts were candy and nuts we'd all have a very fine Christmas." We just have to make the best of what we are, change our future, instead of the past.

When I was a little girl I wanted to be a police women. I remember finding a picture that I drew of myself in uniform. I wanted to be a police women to protect my family. I eventually grew out of that phase.

My career dreams and interest teetered for a while between...criminal forensics, architect, and interior designer. I came to Stout for the interior designer interest in mind. I became involved in politics and developed a new interest. Not running for office but putting on political events. I have been able to volunteer for presidential and governor events.

I hope to see myself one day working for the "Advance Team" that travels with the President for political events. I'm still shooting for the stars.

When I was younger I always just wanted to have horses and be a teacher on how to ride them. My parents told me that that is not a career but something I could do as a hobby. So now I am still looking to get a horse at some point in my life but not really teach riding them anymore because now I am on a different path.

I also know I always wanted to be a singer. I loved singing and I still love singing. I sing along to every song and I enjoy music very much. Again I was told how singers end up in there career. With all the bad stuff and now I am glad I am not a professional singer. I just sing when I can.

I know firefighter, police officer and undercover agent was all once in my mind but mainly for a career I wanted to be an Architect for as long as I can remember. Since Stout has a good construction program, I went for that. Now I still want to be an architect and open my own company someday but I am glad I am doing the contruction major because that might be more of a project manager with an architect interest saying that I would be doing a little more outside work then just in the office.
I am glad where I am and how far I have come and even if I am not going for architecture right now, I still have it in mind and will try to get there even if it takes 10 extra roads and 2 ways back.

When I was little up until about 7th grade I had My heart set on being an arceologist. I loved Dinosaurs and wanted to spend my life digging them up. Once I had my first geology course that went straight out the window. Shortly after I really became infatuated with cares and really wanted to build the prototypes for a living.
Well at first that didn’t happen but I did get into the automotive field working on cars and went to tec school for automotive. Along with enforcer I have always wanted to also play pro foot ball from the time that I was in high school but due to injuries that I thought was gone. That when I discovered a AAA football league and perused it. That’s when everything took off. I got recruited to play foot ball for stout and now perusing my engineering career. So I guess you could say that my drems are still out there and still a possibility.

Ever since I was little, I always wanted to be a Hall Director. Just kidding. As many of you know, it's exceptionally rare that anyone ever has that in mind before they become a Hall Director...unless one or both of your parents were one.

Seriously, I can remember always wanting to be a mother and even though I know that most of you wouldn't deem that a career, to me it was since my mom was a stay at home mom. Although, doing that would be wonderful I know that I need a bit more interaction with those closer to my age! Other occupations/careers that crossed my mind...teacher and artist.

I would say that it is distinctly possible for me to one day accomplish each of those. Once Don and I are married in July the kids will come in the years to follow. While I am not as artistically active as I would like to be, I hope to become more so once grad school is over. Lastly, I have and will continue to toy around with the idea of becoming a professor...someday.

I have a few comments for a few of you on your posts:

Grant...thanks for the feedback on RAs...I took 1/4 your advice. Sorry. It's just the way things happen in the draft at times.

Liz...Don has a friend who works on the "Advance Team" right now and I could ask him for her contact information if you want to connect with her and ask questions. I don't think it's too high of a dream!

Thanks for the posts.

well.... when i was really little i wanted to be a fashion designer. for some odd reason i loved drawing evening dresses. i would draw bout 30 a day and then i would use all my moms old scrap material and make dresses out of them....
i grew out of that eventually and then it was a tie between becoming a pediatrician or a mechanical or civil engineer. i loved math and was good at logic and so it made sense for me to go into something that was heavy in math. also, my whole family, at the time, was in engineering so i wanted to follow in their footsteps. I was about a junior in highschool when i decided upon being a graphic designer and a photographer.

My ideal job would be to work for a company like national geographic or a prestigeous fashion company.

I am still pursuing graphic design and i would still love to work for NG but i am content with working for a small design firm.

When I was little, I wanted to be a ballerina or a fire fighter. The latter probably came from my dad & the stories he would tell us about when he was a volunteer fire fighter or a forest ranger.

I haven't really perused either of those directly, but this summer I do get to work with fire! I think I'm a little bit to excited for that to be wishing I had done things differently. I'm just enjoying the ride!
