We loved it during training...used it to introduce ourselves to the building...but how are you using it on a daily basis?
I would like you to post on the following questions by Sunday, October 5th:
- What does Smart + Healthy mean to you?
- What are 3 ways to spread the word about Smart + Heatlthy?
- Share a story of your own Smart + Healthy experience.

To me smart and healthy doesn't necessarily mean book smart or a health nut, rather it means that a person makes good lifestyle choices. Being smart and healthy means when you party you don't binge drink, you dont smoke, eat healthy and exercise regularly. If I don't exercise I start to get tired faster and I get lazy, so keeping in a routine makes it easier to do.
3 ways to spread the word about smart and healthy - one would be to bring a workout buddy with you and tell them about the smart and healthy campaign for Stout. Another way would be to keep putting up posters on our floors. And a third way to spread the word would be to grab some residents and eat and during the dinner conversation bring up the smart and healthy campaign.
I think I live a fairly smart and healthy life, by working out and not overeating, not saying I eat healthy, but I do not over eat.
I am using smart and healthy daily.
IT is all over my fridge. It reminds me to eat right, and excersize to keep healthy.
Postings, talking about it and programs.
My experience. When I go to the commons, I choose to eat salad and grilled chicken rather than fried, because its smarter and healthier. plus grant is a genious.
Smart and Healthy means to me instead of just going with the flow and what is present to you, you think about it and make the best choice in the given situation.
We are showing smart and healthy with advertisement and our lifestyles, but now we need to present it. Include it in programs, talk about it, call people out on it when they are using it.
For me, I use smart and healthy daily, because I always try to make the best choice in any given sitution. Prioritizing is smart and healthy.
Smart & Healthy - making decisions that are good for your mental, physical, & emotional well being.
Three ways to spread the word:
- promote it (verbally, through postings/bulletin boards, programs, etc.)
- include others in your 'Smart & Healthy' choices
- model it
Story time:
I got to see my family this weekend & do a bike tour with my aunt & uncle. This gave my body a work out (physically 'S&H'), got me off campus (mentally 'S&H'), and allowed me to spend time with my family (emotionally 'S&H').
Thanks the four of you for writing your thought down before the deadline...I really appreciate it. For the rest of you...any entry past this point is considered late.
Smart + Healthy means exactly what it says to be smart + healthy. When incorporating it to my life, that is another question. There are many aspects of my day-to-day life I should be smarter and healthier about, I just have a hard time instituting that change. It is a lifestyle change no matter how big the change.
3 ways to spread the word would be to "Do as I say" AND say as I do, practice what you preach which in turn would help those around you make that healthier lifestyle change. Another would be to create bulletin boards and make people read it by creating an incentive but to make sure they actually took something away, make a "To Do to Change" chart. Have each resident create their own, provide a time line and incentive to help it change. 20 days to break a habit and start a new Smart + Healthy one. A third way may be to incorporate healthy treats at events and incorporating an aspect of the event that institutes some brain power learning.
I am a bad example of Smart + Healthy experiences. I will share what not to do. My freshman year I wanted to take it easy and just get involved with one thing. That one thing led to the rest of my college career of busyness and chaos. If you have a goal of one extra activity, stick with it and add each year if feel want more responsibility. Try and stay open to enjoy that activity and its other bonuses. Make time for friends and family and ALWAYS get in the habit of taking time for yourself before midnight everyday.
To me, "Smart and Healthy" describes the choices I make every day. 3 ways to spread the word about "Smart and Healthy" is by: role-modeling for other residents; discussing your own smart and healthy choices during conversations; and asking residents about their choices and whether their decisions are smart and healthy. My "Smart and Healthy" story consists of balance. I feel smart and healthy when I do not overconsume. This goes for more than food. If I am not over-indulging in work, school, sleep, food, or excersize I feel like I am making very smart and healthy decisions.
not sure if i have to do this... but... .ok....
Smart and healthy is a lifestyle.. so to me it means not only making wise eating choices but also acting in a way which will benefit you in the future.
three ways to spread the word...
- when eating with residents promote healthy choices - salads... milk instead of soda ... etc...
- promote physical activities... volleyball, Frisbee... whatever they like...
- encourage students to be responsible and think through their choices when leaving to go to a party or event.
I choose to be smart and healthy by setting time aside each day to exercise.. it makes me feel good about myself and is a great stress reliever.
Thank you Mikaela, Grant, and Laura for sharing your thought on Smart + Healthy.
Laura...to address your question...yes I did want you to post to this. Anytime that you wouldn't post to a question is if it had to do directly with being an RA. Let me know if you have questions.
"Smart and Healthy" can be defined as a lifestyle dedicated to making descisions that benifit personal wellbeing. Physical, emotional, logical.
Postings on my floor advertise smart and healthy, magnets on every fridge do as well. Lastly word of mouth from me.
My floor has started a smart and healthy campaign by comitting to swimming laps at least once a week. currently our time is 6:30 on thursdays, hoping to expand to other days as well.
Thanks Jack.
